On January 16, 2026, the annual theme launch event for the China International Furniture Fair (CIFF) "Contemporary Design Fair" was held at the CAMERICH Beijing R&D Park in Tongzhou, Beijing. Announcing "Design Commons" as the annual theme, it set the annual benchmark for China's design sphere, officially heralded the commencement of the CIFF Contemporary Design Fair, and systematically outlined CIFF (Guangzhou)'s strategic evolution from an exceptional trade platform to a deeply empowering industry platform.

Scheduled for March 18-21, 2026, in Halls 2.1-5.1 of Area A at the Canton Fair Complex, this Contemporary Design Fair is a pivotal initiative in CIFF's transformation from a trade platform to an industry enabler. Spanning 40,000 square meters, it will converge over 60 commercial design brands, more than 20 designer brands, 40 overseas design brands and studios, and present five major special exhibitions: CMF Trend LAB_2026, Design Field, Design Snack, Design Voyage, and the Intangible Cultural Heritage Craftsmanship Aesthetics Exhibition.

This cross-sectional gathering of the entire design industry chain precisely reflects the tension inherent in the term "Chinese Design" today: on one side, a grand "going global" narrative sustained for years; on the other, the pragmatic path every participant must navigate—concerning how products materialize, how brands grow, and how creativity connects with industry. Between grand visions and practical tasks, a gap has emerged—and building bridges has become the most pressing imperative. Anchored by the theme "Design Commons," this Contemporary Design Fair aims to construct a supportive ecosystem for Chinese design, encompassing design, manufacturing, and commercial realization.

Five Featured Sections Outline the Future Landscape

The fair builds a prismatic observatory and experimental field through five special exhibitions: CMF LAB approaches from material and color trends to provide implementable solutions; Design United introduces international brand perspectives as a reference for commercial design expansion; Design Dimsum, using project practices as a thread, presents the transformation logic from need to product; Design Export focuses on Chinese design going global, exploring cultural narratives and commercial pathways; the Intangible Cultural Heritage Craftsmanship Aesthetics Exhibition starts from skill inheritance and innovation, seeking the contemporary transformation of traditional resources. CMF  LAB

In 2026, the CMF LAB special exhibition, curated by renowned trend research firm YANG DESIGN, enters its sixth year. This edition will revolve around four major design trends—"Algorithmic Nature," "Noise Reduction," "Maximum Utility," and "Slow Sound"—transforming abstract design trends into a laboratory for pioneering furniture and spatial design.

Structurally, it presents a new dimension. The inaugural "2020-2025 Review of CMF Trends in China's Home Furnishing Industry" will systematically compile and showcase a timeline of trend evolution, core color and material research findings, and industrial conversion cases from the past five years, forming a traceable public archive.

Design United: Miniature Nations

The 2026 Design Field special exhibition, titled "Miniature Nations" and curated by designer Li Ximi, orchestrates a cross-temporal dialogue of civilizations. Gathering seven international brands—Technogym, Bulo, Elite to be, ferri1956, Gandia Blasco, Gervasoni, Lumina, Nemo—it selects five civilizations' peak periods (Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, the Viking Age, and Spain's Golden Age), constructing their respective aesthetic and philosophical systems into five distinct experiential spaces.

This dialogue aims to provide a reference for contemporary design. By juxtaposing distinct civilizational logics—such as Ancient Egypt's cosmic order, Ancient Greece's formal rationality, and the Viking concept of fate—the exhibition establishes a diverse aesthetic genealogy. It offers profound inspiration for examining current design: in a globalized context, design influence often stems from a deep understanding and creative transformation of one's own cultural lineage. "Miniature Nations" thus becomes a site that provokes reflection, guiding viewers to reconsider the value origins and cultural coordinates of contemporary design through the juxtaposition of different civilizations.

Design Dimsum

"Design Dimsum," a special exhibition platform consistently curated by Wang Hongchao, takes "Design in Practice: Products Originating from Projects" as its theme this year, collaborating with 12 brands including Gervasoni, Slamp, RYTE, Established & Sons, USM, Dedar, SLIDE, Benwu Edition, Nemo Lighting, FontanaArte, pulpo, and 《Liu Hai's Dream》. The exhibition focuses not on final style, but on the origin of design—the "custom solutions" born from real architectural and spatial projects to solve problems. It systematically presents how these solutions transform from one-off project prototypes into mass-producible, maintainable product systems. Emphasizing the underlying engineering logic and standardization pathways, it attempts to convert validated practical methods into shareable industry resources, echoing the collaboration, transparency, and systematic construction advocated by "Design Commons."

Design Export : Sailing with Roots

The Design Export special exhibition uses "Sailing with Roots" as a thread to explore how Chinese design constructs its own narrative in an international context. Curator Zhou Anbin, considering the authenticity of cultural translation, the feasibility of product realization, and the long-term nature of brand development, has selected over 15 original brands, including Dexian, Shanfu, Kong Dezheng & Xu Yanya's GuluLu Studio, Shijian Children's Furniture, OLOVSON, Huhu、Yingshi INSTEEL, Xuduo, Xiaokong Chengxiang, MMR, File Studio, and Studio Ololoo, all underpinned by solid craftsmanship and clear cultural lineage.

While stylistically diverse, these works share a composed creative attitude: not chasing fleeting trends nor being confined to symbolic appearances, but committed to developing a contemporary design language rooted in local living textures and craft traditions. The exhibition unfolds like a nautical chart, recording how these brands, carrying their cultural roots, navigate towards broader conversational waters.

Intangible Cultural Heritage Craftsmanship Aesthetics Exhibition: Nourishing Silently

Curated by the Guangzhou Furniture Association, this year's Intangible Cultural Heritage Aesthetics Exhibition takes "Nourishing Silently" as its theme, narrating around home art spaces. It meticulously selects sixteen national-level intangible cultural heritage crafts, including Cantonese furniture, wood carving, Canton porcelain, and Canton embroidery, and systematically introduces the "Four Great Embroideries" for the first time, along with porcelain lineages from Jingdezhen, Liling to Hong Kong Canton porcelain, initiating a craft dialogue across regions and materials.

The exhibition goes beyond static display, using scenographic spatial creation to place objects within perceptible daily contexts, delving into the material wisdom and emotional logic embedded in traditional techniques. Its purpose is to provide contemporary design with an aesthetic resource that is convertible, symbiotic, and continuously nourishing, interpreting the Eastern life philosophy of "nourishing silently."
